Walton County exempts detached, non-habitable accessory structures such as sheds of 400 square feet or less from building permits when they are owner-built, unconditioned, located outside the coastal building zone, and on a parcel that already has a permitted principal structure; larger sheds, or any shed within the coastal building zone, require a permit, and setbacks and Florida Building Code standards still apply. Much of Miramar Beach lies within the coastal building zone, so a permit is generally required; confirm current requirements with the Walton County building division before you build.
