Galvalume has superior durability and corrosion resistance compared to traditional metal roofing made from galvanized steel.
Galvalume combines three of the highest performing metals used in roofing. A continuously dipped carbon base sheet with aluminum and zinc alloys. Creating substrate coating that consists of 55% aluminum, 43.4% Zinc, and 1.6% silicone.
Some refer to galvalume as AZ-50 or AZ-55, based on the ounces per sq ft of aluminum-zinc alloy coating. AZ-50 is typically used in painted sheets, while AZ-55 is typically used on bare or unpainted sheets or coil products.
Multiple Layers of Protection:
- Top Coat – Premium ceramic and inorganic pigment for exceptional color, durability and gloss.
- Primer Coat – UV and Moisture resistant, which is a key component to the products longevity.
- Pre-Treatment – Promotes adhesion, moisture, and corrosion resistance.
- Substrate – Galvalume or Galvanized – metallic coating barrier protection on base steel, to prevent corrosion.
- Bare Steel – Mill certified, meeting ASTM standards.
- Substrate - Galvalume or Galvanized – metallic coating barrier protection on base steel, to prevent corrosion.
- Pre-Treatment – Promotes adhesion, moisture, and corrosion resistance.
- Primer Coat – UV and Moisture resistant, which is a key component to the products longevity.
- Backer Coat – Finish coat on backside, covers primer and insures consistent color.
Structural Strength

We use 2.5" x 2.5" square, 14-gauge, or 12-gauge, galvanized tubing for our metal building framing. The galvanized steel provides rust and corrosion prevention.
Extra Heavy Duty Panels

High Ribbed Metal Panels, for extra strength and heat dissipation, used on roofing and walls, standard 29-gauge with optional 26-gauge upgrade.

How do I prepare the ground for a metal garage?
A metal garage can be installed on concrete, asphalt, gravel, or dirt as long as the surface is level within about 3 inches across the building footprint. Concrete slabs are required for engineer-certified installations, and gravel pads should be at least 4 inches deep and extend at least 2 feet beyond the footprint on all sides.
Every Keen's Buildings structure is anchored to engineered specifications during installation:
- Concrete: wedge / anchor bolts drilled into the slab
- Dirt or gravel: mobile-home-style auger anchors driven into the ground
- Asphalt: mobile home anchors
Installers can adjust legs 2–3 inches on the bottom rail to accommodate minor grade variations, but sites with slopes greater than 3 inches should be graded or leveled beforehand.
Pro Tip: Add drainage grading to prevent standing water beneath the structure, and extend your pad at least 2 feet past the footprint for the best results.
Can metal garages be customized?
Yes — every Keen's Buildings metal garage is fully customizable. You can configure dimensions, roof style (regular, boxed eave, or vertical), panel colors, door sizes and placement, windows, walk-in entries, lean-to extensions, insulation, and interior partition walls all the way up to engineer-certified level.
You can also add upgrades after installation. Our metal buildings are designed to be modular and expandable — additional doors, windows, insulation, lean-tos, and interior framing can all be added later without altering the original structure. A $50 return-trip fee applies to add-on orders under $795.
How long does it take to install a metal garage?
Most standard metal garages are installed in 8 to 12 hours and completed in a single day by a professional Keen's Buildings crew. Larger custom builds — such as triple-wides, lean-to additions, or heavily customized structures — may take up to two days, and delivery is typically scheduled within 1 to 4 weeks of ordering, weather permitting.
Are Keen's Buildings metal garages engineered and code-certified?
Yes. Every metal building, garage, carport, and tubular structure from Keen's Buildings is certified by licensed engineer Richard E. Walker, P.E. (Florida License No. 61240). Certified structures are tested to withstand snow loads up to 90 psf and wind speeds up to 180 mph, and come with engineer-stamped drawings verifying compliance with your region's specific wind and snow load requirements.
Vertical roof panels and heavier 12- or 14-gauge steel offer the strongest performance in hurricane-prone, high-snow, or high-wind regions.
Is concrete included with a metal building?
No — concrete is not included in the base price of a Keen's Buildings metal garage because it isn't always necessary, but it can be added to your package and financing at an average cost of approximately $7.60 per square foot. Concrete slabs are recommended for workshops, commercial buildings, and any structure that will house heavy equipment or serve as a certified installation.
Is insulation included with a metal building?
No — insulation is not included in the base price of a Keen's Buildings metal garage, but it can be added to your package and financing at an average cost of approximately $3 per square foot per surface (roof and/or walls). Insulation is strongly recommended for heated or cooled spaces, home workshops, and any structure housing temperature-sensitive items.
Combined with ridge or turbine vents and lighter-colored roof panels, insulation significantly reduces summer heat buildup inside the garage.
Are Keen's metal garage doors, windows, and panels code-approved?
Yes. Every door, window, and panel on a Keen's Buildings metal garage carries an official Florida Product Approval number, including Janus International roll-up doors, Elixir Door & Metal walk-in doors, Pocahontas Aluminum windows, and Capital Metal Supply Ag Panel roof and wall panels. These approvals confirm compliance with state wind-load and building-code standards.

What metal building panel options are available?
Keen's Buildings offers three main metal roof panel configurations — regular (horizontal), boxed eave, and vertical — in 12-gauge and 14-gauge galvanized steel. Vertical roof panels offer the strongest water and snow runoff performance, while horizontal panels provide the most affordable option for mild-climate regions.

Do I need a permit to install a metal garage?
Most municipalities require a building permit for metal garages larger than 120 to 200 square feet, though exact thresholds vary by city, county, and HOA. We strongly recommend checking with your local building department or HOA before placing an order — Keen's Buildings can supply engineer-stamped certified drawings wherever required to help you meet local permitting requirements.
What financing and payment options are available for a metal garage?
Keen's Buildings accepts cash, checks, credit and debit cards, and offers three financing programs: Rent-to-Own with no credit check, $0 Down Financing with same-day approval, and 0% APR 12–24 month "same as cash" financing. Flexible terms are available up to 60 months, with a deposit required at order and the balance due at delivery and installation.
Do metal garages get hot in the summer?
A properly designed metal garage does not get excessively hot in the summer. Choosing taller leg heights of 12 feet or more, lighter-colored roof panels, ridge or turbine vents, and proper insulation can dramatically reduce interior temperatures compared to an uninsulated dark-roof structure.
Leaving at least 4 feet of clearance above your tallest vehicle also improves airflow — a key reason many Keen's Buildings owners insulate their garages for comfortable year-round use.
What is the roof pitch of a metal garage?
Keen's Buildings metal garages ship standard with a 3/12 roof pitch, with optional 4/12 and 5/12 pitches available for steeper roofs. Regular roofs use a gentle rolled profile, boxed-eave roofs feature a traditional A-frame angle, and vertical roofs use the same pitch with vertically oriented panels for superior water and snow runoff.
Can a metal garage be installed next to my house?
Yes — a metal garage can be installed directly next to your house as long as you maintain local setback clearances and the garage is not physically bolted to the home. Many Keen's Buildings customers connect their new garage to an existing structure using a carport or lean-to for a seamless architectural transition.
Where does Keen's Buildings deliver and install metal garages?

DIY garage kits ship nationwide for customers who prefer to assemble their own building.
